Nuraghe Riu Molinu
Pre-nuraghic and Nuraghic period
Description of the site:
The Nuraghe Riu Molinu rise out of the summit of the hills of Su Casteddu, dominating the entire Gulf of Olbia. A ponderous wall precedes the tower, developed to almost 250 m, which corrals entirely the chain of hills. Bypassing the wall, which in some places exceeds 5m in height, one reaches the door of the Nuraghe. The construction has a characteristic circular form, around 8m in diameter. Aside from the room, there are, on the right side of the corridor, a sentry box and a set of steps, leading to a sacrificial trench, in which were discovered fragments of charred bone and ceramic material. Of particular relevance is the bronze, uncovered in the excavations of 1939, which represents a woman carrying an amphora on her head. Following this discovery, scholars agreed that the tower was originally built around 1600 - 1300 BC, and that it was only in the 6th or 5th century BC that the Nuraghe lost its function as a cult centre.
How to get there: Passing the rail flyover in the direction of via dei Lidi, turn immediately on the left into via Mincio, continue for about 2 km the road for the church of Cabu Abbas.
