The National Archaeological museum, designed by the architect Vanni Macciocco, is situated on the 'isolotto di Peddone', along the passenger street leading to the embarkation point at the Isola Bianca and the historical centre. It is characterized by a grand central patio in which there are some recently discovered Roman ships and a series of functional places, such as the library, the auditorium and the congress centre. On the upper floor advanced technology is used to reproduce the event of the Vandals sinking ships, recently uncovered during the construction of the tunnel. Finished in 2003, the preparation phase has just been completed. It will be, therefore, a multi-purpose structure, mainly dedicated to the olbiese architecture from the Neolithic period to the Judicial age.
