Castello di Molara
High Medieval period
Description of the site:
To the South West of the island of the same name is found mount Castello, on top of which one can observe the remains of a fortress from the Judicial period. The castle, erected in a strategic position, once formed part of a defensive quadrangle created by the judges of Gallura for the defense of Olbia and the coastline. The building rises up vertically from the sea and is completely devoid of defensive walls, due to the high degree of natural protection offered by the steep, high sides of the cliff. The look-out function, as regards the defensive quadrangle cited above, is evident: from Castello di Molara one could observe vast tracts of the marine horizon and easily signal the presence of any would-be invaders to the 'torre di Pedres'.
How to get there: It is advisable to scale the North Eastern slope of the hill on foot, having first moored one's boat or dinghy in the relevant area immediately beneath. The ascent is of medium difficulty, and there are suitably shaped rocks to make the climb easier. To be avoided absolutely is visiting when there are strong North-Westerly winds.
