Castello di Sa Paulazza
Byzantine-high medieval period
Description of the site:
The Castello di Sa Paulazza is found around 5 km from the city on the hill of Monte and Telti (height 234m) and it dominates the plain of the entire Gulf of Olbia. The castle has a quadrangular form, with the South-Eastern tower of five-sided shape. The particular shape of this tower puts the probable origin of the castle in the byzantine period, when the emperor Giustinano re-conquered Sardinia in 534AD. Large blocks of granite used in the construction of the building can be traced back to pre-existing Nuraghe structures from the copper age.
How to get there: Departing Olbia take the road for the zone of Enas, pass the level crossing and turn right onto an off-road track. Follow this until you arrive at the houses, then ask permission and continue on foot in a westerly direction.
