Castello di Pedres
Medieval period
Description of the site:
The castle, characterizing all parts of the Southern basin of Olbia, dominates the landscape, rising up from rocks 89 metres high. The ruins comprise a double fence: the first, very large and of quadrilateral form, had the function of containing within it a vast shelf of the hillside; the second, includes a front part of around 1000 square metres and to the rear a section out of which rises the tower and a rectangular building which was probably used as a dwelling. According to most versions, the castle dates back to between 1296 and 1322, during the period of Pisano - Aragonese domination, and more precisely, during the accession of the Visconti family.
How to get There: From Olbia take the road for Loiri, follow it for 3.3 km then turn right, taking the off-road track. After 2 km one reaches a car park beneath the castle. Follow the trail which leads upwards to the monument. The site is now accessible at any time of day.
Services available on-site: The service structure and restoration works are not quite yet up and running. It is not advisable to visit on days when the forecast is for strong 'maestrale' (North-Westerly) winds.
