BERCHIDDEDDU

If you have already visited sea and city and wish to discover another Sardinia just take the road 389 (Olbia-Loiri-Berchiddeddu-Alà dei Sardi) and after a few kilometres you will find yourself in the uncontaminated heart of the island. From Olbia to Berchiddeddu there are only 14 kilometres which need to be travelled slowly so that you can enjoy every view, incredibly fascinating and always different. At about 3 kilometres on the right, you will find the old Airport of Vena Fiorita, now reserved for the helicopters of the armed forces, and then you cross a bridge on the last part of the Rio Oddone (River Oddone).
On the left, the runway of the new Costa Smeralda Airport; and to the right opens a large part of the plains of Olbia, in the centre of which rises the tower of the antique Castello di Pedres (Castle of Pedres). Still to the right, well kept roads indicate the way to reach this medieval monument (from the time in Sardinia known as età giudicale). There also Giants Tombs known as Su Monte de s'Ape, and within a kilometre you can also visit the ruins of a farm dating from the Roman Time in the Republican period. Leaving to the left, the village of Loiri, the mountains can be seen on the horizon defining a series of reliefs and even higher crests covered with different shades of green due to the many different types of vegetation, and to the light creating different hues and shadows from different distances. Nature certainly wears her best clothes, luxuriant olivastri (wild Olive trees), lentischi (Lentisk Pistoche), mirti (Myrtle), cisto (Rock Rose), rosa caninia (Dog Rose), bianco spino (Hawthorn), asfodelo (Asphodel), ferula (Ferule) all Sardinian Flora is represented. But also the hardness of our land transpires, where the points of granite rise with strength from the green giving an even wider range of colours.
So as we go up to the left, we can admire an uncontaminated panorama displayed by nature and to the right, a vast plain rich with pasture, vine yards and different crops.
6 kilometres from Loiri, Berchiddeddu reveals itself amongst the pink granite, carpets of yellow ginestre (Broom) and enchanting wild Olives.
This suburb of Olbia has about a thousand inhabitants: 600 in the village and the rest spread around the other little villages Sa Castanza, Su Trainu Moltu, Battista, Mamusi.
The small centre, surrounded by modern villas keeps the characteristics of an old village. Its narrow and twisted streets lined with modest dwellings, concentrated around the church dedicated to the Beata Vergine Maria (Blessed Virgin Mary).
Our journey is on its own gratifying, but it reserves a pleasant break which we can't refuse at one of the numerous farm restaurants, which at an affordable price, offer a rich and tasty menu that allows us to try the best of Sardinian cuisine, especially that from Gallura.
At this point we have two possibilities, or travel on to the authentic heart of Sardinia via a mountain road to Alà dei Sardi or return to Olbia and admire in the opposite direction the coast from Capo Ceraso to Capo Figari.(e.m.)
